German Study Award 2022 of the Körber Foundation to Weihan Li
Dr. Weihan Li has been awarded the German Study Prize of the Körber Foundation. He received 2nd prize in the Natural and Technical Sciences section for his dissertation "Battery digital twin with physics-based modeling, battery data and machine learning".
Machine Learning for efficient battery use
in mobility and energy supply for sustainable climate protection
In the fight against climate change, batteries play a crucial role as a flexible energy storage system for renewable energy. However, battery aging during use proves to be the limiting factor for an efficient and reliable future energy system. In this work, machine learning enables online aging diagnosis, future aging prediction, and operation strategy optimization, which not only increases battery performance and lifetime, but also reduces unexpected failures and contributes to more transparency about battery health. The developed methodology improves battery use in mobile and stationary applications, enabling safer and longer-lasting operation, which sustainably saves costs, conserves resource use, and is socially feasible. Thus, this work provides an essential building block for a broad acceptance and enforcement of climate-friendly mobility and energy supply on the way to a climate-neutral energy system.
Every year, the Körber Foundation's German Study Award honors outstanding young researchers from all disciplines. The Körber Foundation awards prizes totaling more than 100,000 euros for excellent dissertations of particular social significance. This makes the German Study Prize one of the most highly endowed prizes for young scientists in Germany. The patron is the President of the Bundestag, Bärbel Bas.
