The project "EMMUseBat - Development of methods for the multi-use operation of modular large-scale battery systems in the medium-voltage grid" comprises an examination of various aspects of the operation of a real large-scale battery system (the M5BAT battery system) in the medium-voltage grid. The main focus of the investigation is the aging behavior of batteries in real operation and the participation in the energy and electricity market in Germany as well as the development of new market channels.

The aim of the project is to create and test a platform for the development and testing of new energy management algorithms for large-scale battery systems in various market fields. For this purpose, a digital twin of the system control of the 5 MW storage M5BAT will be developed, which will be used for testing new control algorithms for the vertical and horizontal partitioning of the storage as well as for the preliminary work for testing new marketing channels. The focus is on the development and testing of algorithms with which battery storage systems of different topology and technology (cell chemistry) can be controlled as economically as possible for one or more simultaneously served market applications. The particular challenge here is ultimately multi-use operation or so-called value stacking, in which several applications with different load profiles and operating requirements are served simultaneously by a single storage system, taking into account the technological characteristics of the battery types installed.

The modular design of the M5BAT battery storage system and its subdivision into five different battery technologies also allows technology-specific advantages to be exploited in order to minimize aging and optimally serve market products.

The project is divided into five work packages and is being carried out by the Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives at RWTH Aachen University. In particular, the test marketing operation in various applications is being carried out in intensive cooperation with the company Uniper Kraftwerke GmbH.

On the one hand, the project complements existing research work at ISEA and the newly founded Center for Ageing, Reliability and Lifetime Prediction of Electrochemical and Power Electronic Systems (CARL). In particular, the experience gained from the operation and aging of the large-scale battery storage system forms a foundation for research into the lifetime and economic viability of battery systems in application. These data are further used in other research projects, doctoral theses and student research projects, and the results are presented at national and international conferences.
