Prof. Sauer appointed member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities
On the occasion of Leibniz Day, the Academy's highest awards and new members were presented on June 5. Prof. Sauer was already admitted to the Academy of Sciences for life in 2020, but due to the pandemic, the award could only be made this year. Each year, 14 new members are appointed "so that the discussion of answers can become even more lively and the answers that the Academy gives even more convincing."

Dirk Uwe Sauer is a highly respected national and international expert in the field of battery research and battery systems. He focuses on researching aging processes, diagnostic systems and test procedures to predict the durability or cycle stability of battery systems under practical loads. In addition, he researches practical types of battery applications especially for mobility with application in the field of passenger cars as well as in public transport. With his work, Dirk Uwe Sauer is significantly advancing the field of battery research in Germany, which is highly application-oriented. His high level of expertise enables him to make clear assessments of battery technologies in order to separate practical and economic applications and possibilities from potentials envisioned for the future. In addition to his actual research, he also always keeps an eye on the big picture of future energy systems, allowing him to carefully evaluate alternative technologies along the timeline, such as hydrogen versus battery technologies. This has made him a sought-after advisor to policymakers: for example, he is a member of the German government's National Platform for Mobility and is a member of the BMBF's Battery Research Advisory Council. In addition, he is chairman of the joint initiative of the national science academies (Leopoldina, acatech and the union of the German academies of sciences and humanities incl. BBAW) "ESYS - Energy Systems of the Future". The initiative unites researchers from science and industry throughout Germany with the aim of providing scientifically neutral answers to relevant questions in the context of the energy transition.
