Abstract

Wholistic efforts are underway by every stakeholder to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Adoption of battery systems in mobility and energy storage applications is promising for efficient operations and climate action goals. Although lithium-ion batteries dominate the battery storage systems (BSS) market, efforts are underway to optimize the performance and costs of lithium-ion batteries. This work's aim is to analyze the impact of NCO and NMC 811 cathode coating thickness in digital lithium-ion cells with respect to electrical properties (Gravimetric Energy-Wh/kg and Power destiny- W/kg) and optimization of material costs (per energy-/kWhandpower−/kW) using the Pareto front. For high power applications, the optimal cathode thickness for NCO and NMC-811 is found to be around 25µm −50 µm, whereas for high energy applications, the recommended cathode thickness is 90µm -120 µm. It is emphasized that for better optimization, integration of the manufacturing cost model and real-time raw material cost monitoring is needed for more accurate analysis and optimization.
