Abstract

This work extends the set of tools for parameterizing physicochemical models for lithium-ion batteries. In addition to the known methods from post-mortem analysis, computer tomography is used to observe the mechanical change of the cells and electrodes as well as to perform porosity calculations. Laser-microscope measurements are used to determine the active and non-active overhang area. The evaluation of the height-profile measurements allows for review the production accuracy concerning the position of the electrodes to each other. Measurements with an optical cell are used to observe the lithiation rate and the influence of individual material parameters on cell behaviour. In addition, essential insights into the mechanisms of action leading to capacity loss during the operating period were obtained and described. The work results enable a better prediction of the expected course of battery ageing and thus more reliable life- expectancy forecasts.
