Abstract
Due to its low material cost and robust structure, the switched reluctance machine (SRM) is a potential candidate for highspeed applications, in particular for high-speed, high power backup generator power plants. However, the SRMs still exhibit the inherent drawbacks, such as low efficiency, high torque, ripple and high vibration and acoustic noise, which makes it less popular in the industry application compared to other machine types. The goal of this thesis is to find solutions to deal with these drawbacks from both the design and control aspects. From the design aspect, the machine configuration and main diameters are quickly determined to achieve high efficiency and power density by a proposed pre-design method. Then, a multi-physics design process is presented to find the optimized parameters for further improving machine efficiency, reducing torque ripple and vibration, and avoiding the resonance. A fast fluxlinkage measurement method is developed to ensure the accuracy of machine modeling and comprehensive performance strategy are discussed to optimize machine performance from the control aspect. In addition, an optimization based position estimation method is proposed to detect the initial position of the SRMs. Finally, the generation operation of the design SRM is investigated, which further verifies its feasibility as a backup generator.
