Materials and Components to Meet High Energy Density Batteries
The goal of this network center is the implementation, development, production and test of selected battery materials and components which are promising for future high energy lithium-ion-batteries regarding their properties and processability. The concepts include polymer-based gel and hybrid electrolytes and even all solid state approaches including the corresponding electrolyte/electrode structures. The experimental work is accompanied by modelling of materials, interfaces and cell structures. The production and testing is part of this project as well as the analyses of the economic aspects and recyclability.
MEET Hi-EnD II takes the results from the predecessor project (MEET Hi-EnD) and further develops and investigates the promising results of the past years high energy densities. The polymer, gel-polymer and hybrid electrolytes in combination with solid state electrolytes proved to be promising approaches. The development of advanced production processes for the industrialization of said materials and the safe use of metallic anode materials are a key aspect. For this purpose, polymer, gel-polymer and polymer-ceramic electrolytes showed they can actively protect parasitic reactions with the strongly reducing agent lithium and thus minimize the formation of dendrites. High interface resistances and lithium-ion conductivity are actively being researched.
The basic understanding of the interphase properties in metallic lithium anodes and lithium alloys as well as high capacity anodes using silicon-composites is another main goal of the project. The consortium partners are confident in being able to combine the electrolyte and modelling expertise in collaboration with the processing and cell manufacturing and thus in being able to advance the lithium-ion-system to longer living, reliable and safe high energy batteries. The research results will be transferred and used as a validation for future post-lithium-technologies like lithium-air, lithium-sulfur or even silicon-batteries.
