Model experiment for the investigation of future load balancing in the power system with high temporal and spatial resolution

The objectives of the FlexMex model experiment are, on the one hand, the systematic evaluation of different modelling approaches of energy system models and on the other hand, the quantification of model uncertainties based on ensemble calculations. Thereby, promising model approaches of a temporally and spatially resolved analysis of future power supplies in Germany are compared with each other using a systematic approach. The focus of the first part of the model experiment on individual technologies allows the comparison of the previous approaches to technology mapping and enables well-founded conclusions for the extension of the scope and, if necessary, the resolution and characterisation of the technologies under consideration. The joint analysis of the interactions between the technologies in the second part of the experiment allows the synthesis of possibilities to improve the modelling and to sharpen the previous conclusions. The common goal of the consortium is to improve the robustness of results and the knowledge derived for policy and society. The main focus is on the evaluation of different load balancing options. These include electricity exchange, energy storage, controllable power plants, the regulation of fluctuating generation, load management and flexible coupling to the heat and transport sectors. At RWTH, two institutes are participating in the FlexMex experiment, each with independently developed models.
